Hafes Geschichte
Hafez (also spelled Hafiz), born in Shiraz around 1315, is one of the most celebrated and beloved poets in Persian literature. His full name was Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfeẓ-e Shīrāzī. He is best known for his Divan, a collection of lyrical poems (ghazals) that explore themes of love, mysticism, beauty, wine, and divine union. Hafez’s poetry is admired for its emotional depth, layered meanings, and intricate use of metaphor. His verses have had a profound influence on Persian culture, music, and spirituality. Sufism deeply shaped his worldview, and his work often challenges hypocrisy and dogmatic religion. Many Iranians still use his poetry for divination (fal-e Hafez), opening his book at random to find spiritual guidance. His tomb in Shiraz is a major cultural site. Hafez’s legacy endures not only in Iran but also globally, with many of his works translated into numerous languages, including English and German.
